@manton No problem!
@darius Oh and by the way. I don't think I ever properly introduced myself, I'm a friend of @sjml. I've seen a number of your tweets, toots, (and bots!) through him over the years and found them delightful and interesting.
@darius I mean... probably, yeah. But you never know when there might be a little detail that escaped notice or something!
@darius Not sure if this info would be helpful to @Manton in the micro.blog implementation but figured I'd tag him in so he could see it just in case!
@JohnPhilpin Happy to help. It took me a little bit to get too. But now that I've turned it on it's nice to be able to follow both micro.blog and mastodon people from one timeline, and to be able to reply (and receive replies) from both groups in one place.
I do miss seeing boosts, being able to boost things, and being able to star them (I understand the micro.blog stance on Favorites being private, but I like being able to just give a quick nod with a button press to people when I like what they've posted). So it allows for basic interaction and following between micro.blog and Mastodon but not the full gamut of features.
@grayareas I'm not sure if i agree it's SO superior, but over the last few years I've defintiely started doing it more and more often and it has a lot of advantages!
@vincent I think they're trying to emulate some of the sort of hazy look of the comic, or at least make everything seem a little disorienting and unreal. I kind of like it but I can totally see how it might just annoy people.
@cheri That sounds very frustrating!
@bigzaphod You are not helping my attempts to wait on buying one of these... (I just have to keep telling myself I need to wait until after the holidays when I can better see what my finacial situation is)
@JohnPhilpin So you have to keep in mind that your existing Mastodon account (at Mastodon.social I think?) is a totally separate account. That account is @Fractals. You can cross post to it like you can to a twitter account (which I think is what you have set up now). That's a totally separate option from setting up ActivityPub support. (I will not that I follow your mastodon account and I haven't seen any double posting since you turned on cross-posting so either Mastodon.social is smart enough to ignore the extra posts or one of the two ways you're cross posting there is).
If you turn on ActivityPub support you will essentially be creating a NEW Mastodon account. It'll be @whatever@john.philpin.com (I don't beleive you can mess with the domain at the end, though I could be wrong about that). So you could be @fractals@john.philpin.com or you could be @johnphilpin. But whatever you choose it'll be a separate identity/account from your existing Mastodon account.
I beleive if you leave cross-posting on your posts will go to both accounts.
@cheri Awesome. Awesome to the max.
@JohnPhilpin So when you turn on ActivityPub support, you choose whatever username you want to show up on Mastodon. For simplicity's sake I went with the same username you use on micro.blog (so I'm now @droct), but it's up to you. Keep in mind it'll be a new account, separate from your existing Mastodon account. But you can make the front part of your username (the part before the domain) anything you want.
@macgenie Those two are always so cute!
@darius Ha!
@smokey Yes, I should be more proactive in tagging on things like this. But I also always worry I'll just be a bother (which is silly, I know!).
@eli ha!
@cheri 👍
@manton That's very cool!
@bigzaphod Interesting. I guess I’ll just have to go to a store and try them.
@bigzaphod cool that’s what I probably want to get when I do upgrade. If they’re heavier than my current iPad Air 2 then I probably really don’t want the bigger one.
@bigzaphod Did you get an 11 or the 12.9? This is the first I’ve heard anyone say it’s heavy (admittedly I’m behind on reading reviews)
@manton Awesome! I assumed so, but wanted to check if there were any already known issues. I know Mastodon is the big ActivityPub network (and so the most important to target), but I also know it's meant to be interoperable between lots of different kinds of networks. Thanks for the quick reply!
@manton So I'm only halfway through your discussion of this on the episode (so maybe it'll be covered later in the episode) but does the ActivityPub support mean that people on networks other than Mastodon that use ActivityPub can also follow and reply to my blog posts? Like could someone on a Friendica or Hubzilla instance do the same? (and could I follow them?).
